I have to say I'm really impressed with Blogger's new suite of templates and blog development tools. Hence, I have been updating all of my blogs. No new plant news to report...it's been a dreadful winter. There are plants at church I should report on, which I will get to one of these days.

Thank you for visiting our little Gloxinia blog. I'm sorry to report that the Glox never regenerated after its last bloom, and so we have disposed of it. The cactus and the peace plants also did not move with us to Connecticut, so most of the plants in our previous posts are not with us any longer.

But no worries, I still run Pastor Jim's Rescue Mission for Wayward Plants. I currently have an amyrillis that has refused to bloom through three regenerations, a bowl full of spider plant babies that I haven't potted and are thriving just sitting in water. I do still own the unfortunate little flowering thing that D. once received as a gift, and has never thrived again. It has just two gnarly stalks, but does bloom occasionally. Oh, and I do have a smaller peace plant that my mother gave me. (She kills houseplants. Dead. It was a merciful gift...) Pictures forthcoming.

Homeless Plants

As promised, a word about our other plants. I rescue homeless plants. The large spindly cactus was rescued from the trash heap across the street. We've named it "Audrey" because every time Darrick goes near it, it tries to bite him. It has very small, sharp needles and is really no fun to try to move.

The white planter on the books used to be a very delicate blooming plant of some sort, that did not survive last winter. I've been trying to get it to grow again, but so far, it has only managed one sad little sprout. Its flowers are lovely little pink blossoms.

The 'peace plants' were rescued from a wedding at Marsh Chapel...the bride apparently did not want them. They bloom regularly. They don't look great right now because it is winter...once the spring comes I will re-pot them and they will be happy again.

We're really growing now! The larger of the two sprouts is now about the size of a large marble.

Day Seven

We're having twins! This morning, we noticed a second tiny leaf poking up through the dirt. We're so excited. Just for scale, the leaves on the left are about the size of a pencil eraser each. The bud appearing just to the right is the size of the point of a dull #2 pencil.

Not much change today, but it was overcast and snowing all day. I have moved the plant into the front window of the house where it will get sun all day.

No, there was no Day Two. It was too late in the day to post when we got around to it yesterday.

Today, however, there are two pictures! Now that the plant has started to grow again, it has been moved to a warmer, sunnier location in our house.

We noticed this leaf this morning. The plant has been dormant since October.

Our Gloxinia

So, we've owned this little plant for a couple of years. It is spectacularly beautiful when it is in full bloom, and it dies off completely after it is done. It lies dormant for several months, and then a tiny little leaf appears, signaling that it is going to grow and bloom again.

We think this is cool.
